I'm Clive.

I'm like a web consultant and a web developer rolled into one. If I could do one thing for you, it would be to help you get an important decision right, without you getting it wrong first.

I want to:

  • help you be more profitable because of good, informed decision-making,
  • save you time and money that would otherwise have been spent on a poor decision (or lack of a decision),
  • keep you updated of changes on the web which are relevant to your business.

And, of course, I can handle your technical implementation, like building your website, getting you more visitors with search engine marketing, and so on.

Why do I do it?

I love problem-solving, I love working with business owners, and I love the web. And, let's face it, things move so fast on the web there's no shortage of problems for anyone running a business. It's just no longer as simple as building a website and waiting for people to come to it anymore. It's getting more difficult for business owners to handle it themselves.

“The web is exciting. The impact it's having is mind-blowing, opening up new business opportunities for everyone, forcing us to change the way we do things, but for some people (a lot of people) it's also quite frightening. I particularly want to help those people. ”

Names have disappeared from the High Street because they didn't adapt, and more will follow, but we don't hear about the small businesses that fail. I think it's even harder for them. Yes, smaller means more flexible, but you also need the expertise. How many small business owners have that when it comes to the web? And I'm not just talking about marketing either - the web can transform businesses, not just promote them. Larger businesses can recruit people with this expertise, smaller businesses can't. And even if they could afford to, there just aren't enough good people to go round at the moment.

And the solution?

For most business owners, the solution isn't to hire a web designer anymore. They need a wider range of expertise than that. We're finding business owners need a web team.

“What I want to do is help business owners by providing expertise normally reserved for larger businesses.”

You don't need a big agency, nor should you need to become an expert yourself (if you had the time). You just need a couple of good people who know what they're talking about. People you can trust, people who will get to know your business, give you the advice you need and action it.

Why work with me?

While I started off on the web as a developer, my management experience and background in customer service mean I'm also a damn good web consultant, too. Which, in turn, means I can make a lot of difference to your business. For example, not only will I be able to advise you how best to get people to your website and convert them into sales or leads, I'll be able to carry out the technical implementation too.

You may be surprised to know...

I spent over four years in the pub industry, a large part of that managing front-of-house. I've also trained as a sapper and physical-training instructor with the Royal Engineers and am a qualified primary school teacher.

I have a PhD in plate tectonics. Unfortunately, despite my best intentions it didn't really change the world and I left academia shortly after. Not before my book was published, though.

Despite living in Norfolk, my passions are climbing and hill-running!

I think Good Strategy, Bad Strategy by Richard Rumelt is one of the best books I've ever read and would recommend it to anyone interested in business, large or small. My most visited websites are Stratechery by Ben Thompson, the eConsultancy blog and the Moz: Learn SEO hub, which I'd highly recommend to anyone keen on attracting traffic to their site from search engines.

I frequently blog about online strategy over at cliveportman.co.uk.

Smart Passive Income is an inspirational podcast for anyone wanting to build a business online.

We both work very closely on design. My design strengths are the planning and how websites respond to different devices.

When it comes to technical implementation, I handle almost everything except social media.
